Honestly it's just not common to catch slack for what you're wearing. Sometimes it can be that they just didnt use the right words and you have low confidence still. And other times, you're 13, they're 13. Everyone is 13 and an asshole. So.

I'm a guy getting into vintage styled stuff. Not really thrift shopping, more like getting new stuff that's period correct or styled. I started with a greaser look, wearing the jacket, cuffing my pantlegs, styling my hair with pomade. I was wanting to get into 40's and 50's fashion, mainly with a suit and hat. However, no matter how good I think I look, or what my gf tells me, I still get nervous wearing the fedora. I don't know why. It could be that I have never worn a hat before in my life, or maybe the stigma associated with people trying to be "classy", but I cannot get the confidence to wear it. It's comfortable, I like how it looks, but I just get too damn nervous. Does anyone have any advice?

Wish I could relate to the red lipstick thing but it sadly doesn't go with my skin tone :( vintage isn't very forgiving to non-white

The ending was so relatable haha

I have a small liking for suits with a 1910s to 1940s style. I also like the concept of frock coats

I love this style but could not wear it. Ever. I have a really bad lipstick allergy, which makes me look like a duck if I apply it. 😂

Is it considered wrong to wear clothes that resemble an era but aren’t actually from that era? Like for example a dress that looks very 1960’s but was made in the 1990s?

I love 1960s and 1070s fashion and I would love to dress from those decades. My dad bought me a pair of gogo boots and I have a pair of green bell bottoms + a pair of pajamas bell bottoms with peace signs all over them. I'm so excited! Funny thing is when I was little I use to dislike bell bottoms, dresses and anything vintage but now.... I really love it!!

I get compliments in the university canteen ☺ 90% of the attention I get through vintage is positive tbf. And it's a cool talking point.

I enjoy more modern retro styles and looking at old photos when my mom was a child is a great inspiration since she was from the 70-80s

Karolino gdzie ja kupię urocze sukienki z lat 40!? I generalnie vintage, bo faktycznie wszędzie widuję same pin-up i rockabilly :( Mieszkam w Krakowie i już nie wiem gdzie szukać. :(

I dressed vintage to school (late 1940s- early 1950s look) people guessed 30s, 50s, 60s, and even 80s. Most people just asked why I did my hair funny and why I looked like a grandma/librarian/old lady. I got a few compliments and a lot of confusion.

I know what you mean. I collect vintage and antique Japanese clothing. I'm not Japanese. I started collecting because I see the pieces as beautiful works of art made using skills that are dying-out in Japan. Then I started wanting to wear the items I bought. I used to try to explain what I was wearing and why but it got to be a hassle to both me and the people complimenting me. I just learned to say, "Thank you," and move on unless asked. Then there are the people that say nasty things. I ignore them unless they get to be a nuisance. Then I ask, "What's it to you?" That usually chases them away. And rather than being called "Vintage Girl" I'm that "Woman That's Going Japanese." And yes, I get to hear that song a lot. "I think I'm going Japanese. I really think so."

have you thought about making a lipstick collection video? i discovered you like literally two days ago but have bingewatching since and wondered what all these different red lipsticks you are wearing are as they are simply gorgeous. the only make up i have and wear are lipsticks and i really love red, it's really hard for me to believe i would be the only one interested so could you make one plsssssssss :)

When I wear vintage I notice that more women and young ladies smile pleasantly or tell me they love my outfit. And men 40+ years old give me fond looks.
jessica paoletta (4 months ago)
first off i love you and your channel! you are so informative and cheerfull!!! ok sooo.....I like the idea of vintage clothing and adore the 40s and 50s, but I can never seem to bring myself to wear more vintage clothing cuz... 1) I love my jeans (especially the skinny ones) 2) I don't really wear makeup (except for special occasions) 3) I feel to lazy to do my hair everyday and im not good at doing it in general Im probly just lazy and full of excuses lol but maybe one day I'll get more vintage inspired things and work on my hair skills and my "avoidance" of lipstick
Cyran Martin (4 months ago)
Hint for lipstick staying, apply the lipstick liberally and blot regularly with tissue then put a translucent powder on, afterwards reapply the lipstick, blot, and powder. Final coat then blot should stay there all day

I love buying vintage inspired instead of vintage because 1. I'm plus sized 2. It's expensive 3. I eat like a demented garbage disposal. Also love watching this again now that I'm like 3 years into being vintage-ish and now finally got my vintage cut to match. I didnt get any of this when I started but now it's so much funnier

I remember going to a vintage Club Car Show, and it seemed the Page look alikes were a dime a dozen. Everything was rockabilly or that classic pin-up you see everywhere now which isn't really classic. I was the only one that dressed in a more demure 50's dress with pearls. Actual vintage hair. I had several people ask me to take pictures with their cars, passing up the "Page" crowd because I looked more accurate with their car. What I like about the attention, is it's all the right kind! It comes from a point of view of genuine interest.

I don't think I would ever wear vintage. It's because my body type is almost never included in fashion. I'm short with big breasts0 (really big breast), visible waist but still a bit plumpy and with relatively small hips. It's not that I hate my body shape, it's very feminine. But if I were 10 cm taller... It's very hard to find things that fit. Not to mention that my face look like I was 15. I'm closer to 30 than to 20 so. So I look kinda ridiculous.

There is a girl in my nothing city who dresses like a perfect 40s film star. Hair , makeup , hats everything . She always brightens my day when I see her . Like a piece of art . And she is a bit of a celebrity because she stands out so much I have noticed her several times and mentioned seeing her to a coworker and she knew exactly who I meant.

I like that scarf in your hair for a punch of color! I’ve worn cat ear headbands for years because they don’t hurt me and they keep my hair from falling forward (and because I like them) It IS nice to make ppl smile.
Cori Chin (7 months ago)
Fashion is so diverse here where I'm from, it's not uncommon to see people dressed unusual, or even retro, not vintage per say. But, you don't look like a "freak" just different, creative, cool. Why do they think you're weird? What is fashion like in Poland? Does everyone look the same?
Cori Chin (7 months ago)
I think "ugly but stylish" is edgy. Maybe that's the word you're looking for?
xxmessymindxx (7 months ago)
As a goth/punk I can relate to the attention part. Nice things...yeah sometimes, usually about my hair. If you wonder why I'm watching your videos...I just think you're really charismatic and I think vintage clothing is starting to grow on me because of it. ^-^

I think I’ve watched this twice now? Thanks for these tips I love vintage I have always been into it! I only buy vintage pieces that I feel like I can’t live without. I have 5 dresses and 1 pair of pants and I love them all!! But boy if I find another perfectly fitting 50s shift dress I will swoop it up instantly

But I see these frikkin children who own like hundreds of vintage dresses LIKE HOW THO I MEAN IM A KID TOO BUT I DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH STUFF HOW DO THEY AFORD THIS
Karolina Żebrowska (8 months ago)
most of the time, they’ve been collecting vintage stuff for a while. like vintage people on Instagram who are “big” are usually in it 10+ years. so don’t compare yourself with them and build your collection SLOOOWLYYY WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

I love to use vintage dresses and skirts and when I was in High School some people used to treat me like "prude"and thought I was afraid or wasn't allowed to show my legs when actually I just wore it because I liked it and it was really comfortable. That kept me from using vintage clothing for many years after. I wish I'd had your channel back then
sadknee (8 months ago)
Can you please please please do a video over how to dress 1940s? That's my favorite decade but there's so many things like dresses and skirts and sweaters and pants, its overwhelming. Can you do a video over everything 1940s?
Iridescent Aurora (8 months ago)
I totally get the lipstick thing, purely because there are SO MANY different hues of red. Like, you wouldn’t wear a lipstick that has an orange undertone if you’re wearing a pink outfit, it just wouldn’t look right.
Hamster Art (8 months ago)
I always feel bad because whenever someone comes up to me and asks where I got my dress/skirt/something and I have to say I got it from a thrift shop bc im cheap and wear vintage style rather than authentic kjhgfdssd. But I'm always really happy when people show an interest in my clothes and say they love my outfit! lol ive always loved being the centre of attention i guess. I always look at those 20's drop waist dresses and cry bc theyre so pretty but I only look good in the new style silhouette lol. the red lipstick addiction is real!!!!!! oh god i struggle with hair bc my hair refuses to keep curls and im just bad at it lol.

I get so much staring( I'm goth ) but I don't get compliments, I do get people staring at me like saten himself though. Which honestly I love. I love scaring people. But I do find it strange when I'm just wearing a black hoodie, black jeans, and combat boots but they'll still be glaring at me like the devil.
Kelly Winship (8 months ago)
I am in love with your style. You look like my grandmother back in her day and that’s a compliment because she was gorgeous. I wish I could pull off your look but I’m fat and old lol
Annie Guimarães (8 months ago)
hi! i love your videos and i’m starting to wear vintage! how did you do your hair on this video?
Katu (8 months ago)
i'd be down for some vintage clothing/hair content from other places than western hemisphere/europe/america, to see the differences. I started collecting vintage pieces that actually come down to traditional pieces from around the world, but the problem is that there are not necessarily photos to base yourself on when it comes to the way to style them properly.
So open and honest!♥️
Malcadicta (8 months ago)
The "people staring" part is common for any out of the ordinary style (what is "out of the ordinary" depends heavily on country however). I rocked blue hair in Poland and even got a few kids asking their parents "why does this lady have blue hair". I didn't mind, to be honest, but the same blue hair in, for example, Scotland (where I lived too) is pretty popular, at least among people my age. But the comments stay! I even had a bus driver tell me he waited for me on the bus stop because he noticed me thanks to my electric blue hair when I was running to catch the bus xD By the way - I love your videos. I don't wear vintage in the same way I don't wear gothic but I do love both these styles on other people and sometimes steal minor ideas to incorporate into my more casual style (I'm waaaay to lazy to go with anything like this all the way).

A bit of a late comment. I want to eventually build up to a chance of dressing 1980s look. I can’t afford anything yet but I just read “Victorians like long hair” so I kept my hair long and uncut. Until eventually my mom came to visit, and commented “how are you going to find jobs! You look like a little girl!”(what?) I cut it and am regrowing it. This is off to a good start. I realised that any vintage dressing takes time to collect and time to maintain and time to perfect. At least I know I’m not the only one now...?
Pi for breakfast (8 months ago)
sae osthavula, yeah. It is funny.
sae osthavula (8 months ago)
Pi for breakfast you are right. 1890s is the year I meant XD I just realised. I also accidentally visualised a gentleman in leotard and it is absolutely hilarious.
Pi for breakfast (8 months ago)
sae osthavula, no, I meant, when I think of 1980, Victorian is the last style that would pop in my head. The first style that pops in my head is feathered volumous permed hair, punk rock leather, and leotard spandex sportswear. When I think of Victorian hair, it’s carefully styled long hair. This isn’t what the 80s reminds me of.
sae osthavula (8 months ago)
Pi for breakfast you mean you don’t think they like long hair?
Pi for breakfast (8 months ago)
sae osthavula, you sure you mean 1980s? That doesn’t scream Victorian to me.

I like pin up but I also see the styles that look authentic but they have high necklines not low ones. Their are a lot of shops online that make these vintage style dresses

Skye ID (8 months ago)
I'm Trad Goth. The way I look is usually well-received, and I get a lot of compliments. One of the exceptions to that is when I wear black lipstick. For some reason, it's a lip colour that scares some people. They see black lips, and some folks think Goths are baby-eating satan worshippers! I never want to be around kids, and I avoid them like the plague. Also, I don't believe in satan. So they're wrong on both counts.

Anyone have recommendations for those “sporty vintage” type people I could follow? I didn’t even know that was a type!

That happens to me all the time ,my style right now leans more towards the 50's with full dresses and petticoats, I am trying to get clothes that can look more 30's but I haven't bought anything yet.

the hardest thing for me about shopping vintage is that im 6'4", im able to find SOME mens clothes that fit but never anything long enough. Oversized mens shirts fit sometimes. Love your videos btw ive been binging them all night but im a history major so i consider it like doing homework :)
Wild Rabbit (8 months ago)
I'm working on going vintage Victorian... which isn't really possible or practical, so it's more like collecting things that have the look of being Victorian, like frilly shirts and granny boots. I have two corsets but no way I'm wearing one every day. lol.

I was in a grocery store wearing a military caped greatcoat. I was vaguely aware that I was being stared at, but that's pretty normal when you're in the dairy section wearing something that went out of style over a hundred years ago. What started to weird me out was the realization that a man was following me, but he stayed pretty far away and kept trying to make it seem like he wasn't following me, and wasn't watching me. After a bit, a woman finally caught up with him and they had a conversation, I could tell he was embarrassed, and he kept doing that little half hand wave to point me out while still trying to seem like he wasn't drawing attention to me. The woman looked exasperated and came right up to me and said, "My husband wants to know where you got the coat from and how much it cost." Turns out he did civil war reenactments and he was desperately in love...with my coat.

I wish I knew, that vintage clothing can stink. I mean, really really stink. And that you shouldn't take care of them, like its a regular piece. So, now my whole flat stinks foul and gross. And all of the clothes, that I washed with it. Oh god, what have I done.
Krümel93 (10 months ago)
😊 hey, since im a huge fan of the victorian style I suddenly came across your channel... and tbh now im a huge fan of you as well 😍

XtremeKaiba (11 months ago)
I've always dressed odd, most of my things have a Victorian or Renaissance flair to them, so a lot of people do stare. Some look at you like you are a freak, or some really like it, I dress up in my finds the closest I can get to the time period, when going to Historical places and often get confused with the reenactors or know the History, so the actors tell me I should do it, that I'd fit in. I am, because of this thinking about becoming a tour guide that dresses in period clothing, I think I'd be good at it and love it. I cringe when girls go out in their pajamas, how can they do that without feeling very under dressed? They are meant for bed, not outside wear.

I used to dress in the vein of the 50s rockabilly style, but something no one ever wants to address is how elitist the (online is all I know) community is. Very catty women that more often than not vocally support the modern women-in-solidarity feminism... “women should lift each other up” is kind of a myth, I’ve found :/

I'm still trying to learn how to do my hair properly, I'm still slowly building my vintage wardrobe and trying to understand the diversity of this style and I'm sooo afraid of people's judgement x) and hate being noticed sooo it's complicated to dare wearing vintage ><

For the '50 shades of vintage' you refer to, I actually get "You look very German", or "You always remind me of a German woman from the second world war" comments. :)))
