Last Known Photos of Jim Morrison in Paris on June 28, 1971

03:06
On June 28, 1971, Jim Morrison with girlfriend Pamela Courson, and their photographer friend, Alain Ronay, took a day trip to Saint-Leu-d’Esserent, north of Paris, less than a week before Jim died on July 3 at age 27. These are the last known photos of Jim... Over the days following these pictures taken by Ronay, Morrison was seen at the Le Mazet bar and at a movie theater called Action Lafayette, where he reportedly saw a Robert Mitchum film titled Pursued. Morrison's body was discovered at an apartment he had rented on Rue Beautreillis on July 3, 1971, after he succumbed to an apparent heroin overdose. (Photos by Alain Ronay via ParisMojo.fr)

Victorian and Edwardian Interiors – 38 Rare Photos Show Everyday Life of People in Their Houses Over

06:04
The economic transformations of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought about further changes in men's and women's roles. Work was less likely to be done in the home, as fewer and fewer Americans lived on farms, and men left the home to work in offices and factories. Men assumed sole responsibility for the financial support of the family, becoming the breadwinners, a term coined in the early 19th century. Married women were not supposed to work for wages, and were considered too pure and innocent to be out in the working world. Women were supposed to devote themselves to domestic duties, and children were seen as young innocents who needed a mother's protection. Fathers had less and less to do with raising their children. Although the 19th-century ideal held that married women were not supposed to work, women did contribute to the family's well-being. Wealthy women planned formal dinners, balls, and other social gatherings that were crucial to their husbands' political and business success. Middle-class women sewed for what they called pin money, small amounts that frequently balanced the family budget. Married women in the middle and working classes took in boarders, sold hot lunches or pastries to neighbors, and saved money by doing their own baking, brewing, gardening, and other chores. It was also common in middle- and working-class families for sons to be sent to school, while their teenage sisters supported this schooling by working in a factory, teaching in elementary schools, or taking in sewing. Such work was considered acceptable as long as it was either done in the house or by unmarried young women. Many 19th-century American families did not fit into this nuclear family ideal, as it was expensive. High housing costs meant more people than just the nuclear family often lived under one roof. Extended families, including grandparents and other relatives, were most numerous in the mid-19th century. Immigrants clung to traditional extended-family forms, and poorer families often included grandparents, grandchildren, and sometimes aunts and uncles in order to maximize sources of income and save on rent. Check out these amazing photos below to see how did everyday life of people in their houses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

30 Vintage Mugshots from the 1920s

05:26
These pictures are from a series of around 2500 “special photographs” taken by the New South Wales Police Department photographers between 1910 and 1930. These “special photographs” were mostly taken in the cells at the Central Police Station, Sydney, Australia and are, as curator Peter Doyle explains, of “men and women recently plucked from the street, often still animated by the dramas surrounding their apprehension”. Doyle suggests that, compared with the subjects of prison mug shots, “the subjects of the Special Photographs seem to have been allowed – perhaps invited – to position and compose themselves for the camera as they liked. Their photographic identity thus seems constructed out of a potent alchemy of inborn disposition, personal history, learned habits and idiosyncrasies, chosen personal style (haircut, clothing, accessories) and physical characteristics.”

25 Vintage Photos of Bonnie & Clyde in the 1930s

25 Vintage Photos of Bonnie & Clyde in the 1930s Possibly the most famous and most romanticized criminals in American history, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two young Texans whose early 1930s crime spree forever imprinted them upon the national consciousness. Their names have become synonymous with an image of Depression-era chic, a world where women chomped cigars and brandished automatic rifles, men robbed banks and drove away in squealing automobiles, and life was lived fast because it would be so short.

23 Extraordinary Mugshots of Turn of the Century Prisoners

04:29
“Some years ago I discovered a cache of glass negative mug shots taken in the early 20th century; each negative was inscribed with the man’s name and alleged crime. In order to research the life of each man pictured in the 500 negatives, I spent the next three years traveling back and forth from New York to the small Northern California town where the photos were taken. I discovered the photographs were taken by Clara Smith, a town photographer more accustomed to taking images of brides and babies than newly arrested suspects. The only extant records of the men's crimes were the newspapers of the time, so I read through every copy of the daily newspaper(s) from 1901 to 1908 to find news of the men pictured in the images. The project resulted in the book, Prisoners, a collection of 70 images with accompanying narrative text on each subject.” — Arne Svenson In Prisoners, New York artist and photographer Arne Svenson presents some two dozen portraits of turn-of-the-century prisoners, which the artist developed from found negatives. Each image (about one to two feet) is a diptych mug-shot (full face and profile), with the criminal's name and crime etched into the emulsion and visible above the subject's head. The crimes range from petty larceny to murder in various ages and races.
